What is MedAngel and how do I use it?

MedAngel helps you store temperature-sensitive medications properly.

It consists of a small temperature sensor, which connects to a mobile app on your phone via Bluetooth. The MedAngel sensor is meant to be kept with your medications as it continuously measures the temperature at which they are stored. The MedAngelONE app shows you the current temperature and alerts you when the safe temperature range of your medication is exceeded, so that you can take action. A timeline helps you track temperature changes over the course of the last 30 days.

By using MedAngel, you will no longer have to wonder about the safety of your medications, as it helps you keep them safe in storage at home, while you are out and about during the day, and while travelling.

How does MedAngel help me keep my medications safe?

Your medication can be selected from a list in the app, and the safe temperature for it will be automatically displayed. If the sensor detects that it is getting too warm or too cold for your medication, the app will set off an alarm, allowing you to take action and prevent the quality of your medication from being compromised.

How many sensors do I need?

That depends on your medications and on your lifestyle. Most of our insulin users, for example, have two sensors: one for their insulin in use, that they carry around with them during the day, and one for their stock in the fridge at home. You might want to use only one sensor to put with your medications in your fridge and occasionally take with you in a cool bag, or you might also want to use two sensors to check on meds both at home and in your office fridge.

What makes MedAngel better than other digital devices?

There are plenty of internet-connected temperature sensors available, including smart fridge thermometers and other IOT devices. MedAngel is the only temperature monitoring device specifically designed for medication. With the right temperature range for your specific medication in your phone and our smart alerts, you’ll find it much easier to keep your meds at a safe temperature.

How long is the warranty on the sensor and what is the battery life?

MedAngel sensors have a 2-year warranty and are powered by replaceable high-quality lithium-ion batteries. Thanks to Bluetooth Low Energy, the battery life is about 9 months. When the battery is running low, you will receive a notification in the app.

The sensor is powered by a CR2032 lithium coin cell. These are standard batteries that should be found in any electronics store. It is important to get lithium batteries since alkaline batteries will not perform that well in a refrigerator.

How does MedAngel work?

Once you have added your MedAngel sensor in the app, the temperature updates automatically, whenever phone and sensor have a Bluetooth connection.

The sensor records temperature every 3 minutes and sends this info to the phone. The temperature in the app is updated every 5-10 minutes. Update frequency is higher or lower depending on Bluetooth signal strength and other things like battery status of your phone and how many other apps are open on your phone.

When you have been away from the sensor and come back, the app will automatically load history data from the sensor. The MedAngel sensor saves temperature history over a maximum of 7 days. When you come back to your sensor after a few days, for example you come back home to the sensor in your fridge after a weekend away, the app will update automatically and you can see what happened in your absence in the timeline.

If there are more than 1 or 2 days of history data, this can take a few minutes. Just place your phone somewhere where the signal strength to the sensor is strong leave the app open on your phone for a moment while the .

Which permissions does the app need on my phone?

  • The app needs to be allowed to run in the background.The app will update temperature automatically and give alarms if it is too high or low. In order to do that, it needs to be able to work even when it is not opened on your phone at the moment. Every mobile phone is programmed to save battery and will automatically try to close every app that is not used actively. To prevent that:
    on iPhone: don’t close MedAngel manually (by swiping up the screen when checking which apps are open)
  • on Android phones: allow the app to run in the background in your phone’s battery settings
    On Android phones (not iPhones), you will also have to give the app location permission.

Do I need an internet connection for the app to function?

No internet connection is required for the app to function, since the sensor and the app are connected via Bluetooth. However, you will need to be connected to the internet to do the following:

  • Set up the app for the first time by signing up and confirming your email.
  • Checking out the help manual, or asking us to add your medication.

If you log out of the app for any reason, you will have to be connected to the internet to log in again and continue using the app and sensor.

Can I track multiple medications with one sensor?

The MedAngel sensor continuously measures temperature and is kept with the medications you want to monitor. If you are keeping multiple medications in one place, like your fridge, it makes sense to select and attribute them to one sensor in the app. The MedAngelONE app will give you medication-based notifications, so if the temperature is critical for one of your medications but not for the others, you will only get an alert for that particular one.

What are the different use modes in the app?

Many medications are stored in the fridge, which should maintain a temperature of 2-8°C/36-46°F, but some can also be removed from the fridge and stored at room temperature (usually up to 25°C/77°F) for a limited amount of time. MedAngel ONE knows the safe temperature ranges for your medication for both long-term and short-term storage. Simply select your use mode in the app by choosing either ‘storing’ or ‘carrying’ and the temperature ranges will adjust accordingly.

For an insulin, the use modes might look like this:
‘storing’: 2-8°C/36-46°F
‘carrying’: 2-25°C/36-77°F

For other medications, that might need to be refrigerated at all times, the use modes might look like this:
‘storing’: 2-8°C/36-46°F
‘carrying’: 2-8°C/36-46°F

What kind of battery do I need for my sensor?

The sensor is powered by a CR2032 lithium coin cell. These are standard batteries that you should be able to find in any electronics store. It is important to get lithium batteries since alkaline batteries will not perform that well in a refrigerator.

Do I need to be near my MedAngel in order for it to work?

The MedAngel sensor is connected to your phone via Bluetooth, but has an internal memory for temperature data for up to one week. Bluetooth is a direct signal between phone and sensor and only works when the two are in proximity, eg in the same room.

There are no real-time temperature updates when:

  • MedAngel and your phone are not within Bluetooth range (same room, same building)
  • Bluetooth is turned off on your phone
  • your phone is turned off
  • you are logged out from the app

When phone and sensor are not connected, MedAngel saves that data and transmits it to the app as soon as sensor and phone are connected again.

Can I connect multiple phones to one sensor?

MedAngel should be paired with one phone, and connecting it to two phones is less ideal. The sensor broadcasts temperature data via Bluetooth, and the closest phone will receive it. This means that data might be end up scattered across two different phones. The timeline view, for example, would not be complete on either of them.

Can I use MedAngel in cool bags?

Yes! The sensor is waterproof and can therefore also be used with water-activated cool bags, such as Frio bags. With MedAngel, you can be sure that your cool bag is working right. A notification will let you know when it’s time to replace cooling elements or to re-activate the cool bag. There is no need to worry, even in hot climates.

Can I use MedAngel on flights?

Yes, you can use MedAngel on most flights, because the sensor uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone. While Wi-Fi or cellular connections (required to make a phone call or send a text message) may need to be disabled on flights, Bluetooth connections are allowed with most airlines. Simply activate airplane/flight safe mode in the settings on your phone and then enable Bluetooth. This way, MedAngel will monitor your meds during your flight as well.

Why should I use MedAngel in my refrigerator?

For long term storage of most temperature-sensitive medications, 2-8°C/36-46°F is the recommended safe range, which should be compliant with the temperature in a refrigerator. However, many domestic refrigerators have internal warm or cold spots, or wide variations in overall temperature, so medications may nevertheless be exposed to temperatures outside the recommended range.

It’s not all that complex. Often, it is enough to move your medications to a different shelf or to adjust the settings. Use MedAngel to find the perfect spot in your fridge for your meds and keep on eye on it during seasonal changes!

Why does the app request location permission?

On Android phones, MedAngel ONE will request permission to use ‘location services’ on your phone. MedAngel does NOT track or save your location! It is not our choice to request location permission, but a technical necessity because of the way Android phones connect with Bluetooth devices.
MedAngel sensors are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices. Since the Android 6.0 update, location services are required on Android phones, so that the app can identify and connect to BLE devices. This does not only affect the MedAngel sensor, but also other BLE devices like fitness trackers. If location permission is not given to the app, it can’t find the sensor or receive temperature updates from it and it won’t work. We do not utilize, track or save your location data.
